0 Rapid population and economic growth are destroying biodiversity. A growing demand for agricultural products requires ever new cultivated areas. Even though technological advances are making agriculture more efficient, the growing population makes up for these successes. Effective nature conservation needs concepts against population growth and for sustainable consumption.

Environment and life
The current phase of the LIFE programme (2018-2020) continues to co-finance nature conservation, environmental and climate action projects.  The LIFE Multiannual Work Programme 2018-2020 (MAWP 2018-2020) sets out the general objectives of the LIFE programme, the types of projects aimed for and the associated budgets. €1.2 billion is allocated for nature conservation and environmental protection, and a further €413.25 million for climate action for the making of grant awards
