Rubbish dump pollutes for decade in Lam Dong 09/05/2011

The Cau Bon rubbish dump – the main waste disposal site in Lam Dong Province's Di Linh District – has been seriously polluting the environment for nearly 10 years, local officials said.

Meanwhile, authorities said land for alternative sites would not be cleared until next year.

The district People's Committee planned to create two rubbish dumps and build two waste-treatment facilities in Duc Trong and Di Linh districts that would be capable of processing 450 tonnes of rubbish a day, said Tran Dinh Sy, director of the district's Public Utility Exploitation and Management Centre.

The Cau Bon rubbish dump in Gung Re Commune was opened by the Di Linh People's Committee in 2003. It was originally designed to occupy a 7,000-sq.m area but has grown to 10,000sq.m, according to a report by the district's Division of Natural Resources and Environment.

An official from the centre, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We often bury the rubbish and use deodorising substances but, to be honest, the rubbish dump still gives off a bad smell."

About 20cu.m of rubbish is dumped at the site each day.

"The rubbish dump also pollutes the ground water and affects the Li Liang Waterfall – a popular tourism site," he said.

Sy said the dump was usually bulldozed four times a year.

"Last year because of a shortage of funds, we could only bulldoze the rubbish twice," he said.
